Journalism award : "Human Rights and the European Union".

AWARD

 

The journalism award "Human Rights and the European Union" is a press competition in the field of promoting human rights. It is open to journalists based in Cameroon.

The competition is organised by the Delegation of the European Commission in Cameroon in cooperation with the Belgian Consulate and the United Nations Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Central Africa. The aim is to raise awareness and increase understanding of human rights issues and the role of the European Union in this field.

 

The award will be launched by the Head of Delegation of the European Commission in Cameroon, at the occasion of Europe Day on 9th May 2008 in Yaoundé.

 

An independent jury, consisting of a representative each of the Delegation of the European Commission, the United Nations Centre for Human Rights and Democracy, and the Belgium Consulate as well as a media professional, will select the winners amongst the journalistic works submitted. The Delegation of the European Commission will award the prize at the occasion of the Belgian national celebration on 21st July 2008.

 

PRIZE

 

The award is a week’s stay in Brussels, working at the European Commission headquarters. The transport is sponsored by Brussels Airlines.

 

 

It is envisaged that up to four prizes may be awarded: two to journalists representing the written press (including online) and two to journalists representing the audiovisual press.

 

CONDITIONS FOR PARTICIPATING

 

Journalists must fulfil the following two conditions:

be a journalist resident in Cameroon,

work regularly for a press organisation.

The "journalistic work" (only one entry for each candidate) must fulfil the following conditions:

Have as its theme the efforts of the European Union to promote Human Rights in Cameroon or elsewhere in the world.

Have been published / broadcast between 1st January 2007 and 1st July 2008 during a radio/TV program, on line, by/in a press agency, an international, national or regional newspaper or magazine.

Be submitted in French or English

Be destined for the general public. Works published/broadcast in specialised media destined for professionals are not eligible.

 

INFORMATION TO BE PROVIDED

 

For written press : a copy of the article as published, with the name of the newspaper or magazine, of the author and the date of publication ;

For online press : a copy of the article as published, with the name of the author and the address of the website where the article can be found,

For audiovisual press: a copy of the audiovisual work broadcast by a radio or TV station, including the credentials, to be submitted on VHS cassette, CD or MP3 file, with the broadcast date.

 

The candidate shall provide a photocopy of his or her professional card (where applicable) and identity card.

 

In the interest of promoting this award, the European Commission reserves the right to publish and reproduce the selected works. These will not be returned to the candidates. The "works" must arrive by noon on 7th July 2008 at the latest at,
